The Civil War and Commonwealth period is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and interesting times in British history, laced with battles, sieges, political and religious frictions. Finally after the beheading of King Charles I and the defeat of the Royalists, the Commonwealth period began, led by the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell until his death in 1558. After Cromwell's death and a short-lived Commonwealth the Royalists returned and Charles II took the throne.

This uniface Commonwealth lead weight is a scarce piece. The obverse shows the conjoined shields of England and Ireland, reflecting the series of coins struck during the Commonwealth.

    Diameter: 20mm. Weight: c.7.0g.
