  • Anglo-Saxon. Sceatta, c.710-60. Wodan Head / Pecking Bird Type. Hamwic (Southampton) Mint. Series H, Type 49, Variety 3 Reverse.


    Diameter: 12-13mm.


    Obv: Woden head facing within a pellet border, bosses (pellets-in-annulets) around. Rev: A pecking crested peacock with splayed feet right, cross pommée below neck, pellet in annulet above.


    Provenance: Detector find, Bradford Peverell, Dorset, c.2014.

    An unusually well struck example in a very good state of preservation. The strong strike and attractive tone leaving the coin with superb appeal. A striking piece of Anglo-Saxon art.
