Anne, 1702-14. Halfcrown, 1703. Vigo.

Anne, 1702-14. Halfcrown, 1703. Vigo.

  • This Queen Anne Halfcrown dated 1703 was minted from treasure captured from Spanish galleons in Vigo Bay. The Battle of Vigo Bay, also known as the Battle of Rande, was a naval engagement fought on the 23rd of October 1702, during the opening years of the War of the Spanish Succession. By putting the word 'VIGO' under the Queen's portrait on silver and gold coins, England was openly celebrating its victory and mocking the Spanish by turning the captured treasure into the coins minted in 1703. All of these coins are dated to the year after the treasure was taken and the battle fought. The Vigo coinage is rarer than the similar 'LIMA' series of George II coins over 40 years later.
