Arthur Duke of Wellington: A Medal Box With Paper Inserts, 1815.

  • Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington is probably one of the most well-known and recognised military and political figures in British history. During his military career he lead the victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, this gained him a heroic title until this day.


    This copper Box Medal was issued in c.1815, it is to celebrate the victories Wellington lead in the British Battles of the Peninsula War, up until 1815. The obverse shows the distinguished bust of Wellington facing left, and the reverse with legend in eleven lines within a wreath. The box contains 13 of the original 14 monochrome paper roundels, detailing battles fought by Wellington during the Peninsula War of 1808-14.


    The box measures 75mm in diameter, there are some surface marks and wear, also a small ding/dent beside the bust. Some of the roundels have some light wear.
