Ancient Greece. Alexander ‘The Great’, Alexander III, 336-323 BC. AR Tetradrachm. Seleukid Anchor Counterstamp.

 

Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin, countermarked with an anchor. Rev: Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing in right, AΣ above KH in left field.

 

The anchor counterstamp features on a number of Alexandrian type issues by civic authorities, this allowing the circulation in Seleukid territories.

 

A bright surface, cleaned in the past. Even wear and showing nice details throughout.
