George II, 1727-60. Halfcrown, 1746. Lima.

George II, 1727-60. Halfcrown, 1746. Lima.

  • This Halfcrown was minted in 1746 from some of the treasure seized by Admiral Anson in the 1740's while circumnavigating the globe. In 1743 he had captured the treasure ship from Manila to Acapulco with treasure, worth then, half a million pounds. Coins minted with the word 'LIMA' below the king's bust were to commemorate the lucrative harassment of the Spanish colonies in the New World.

The tone on this Halfcrown is attractive, the reverse is particularly strong with colourful lustre. This coin is certainly a wonderful piece of mid-18th century British and even world history.
