George IV, 1820-30. Sovereign, 1826.

George IV, 1820-30. Sovereign, 1826.

  • This Sovereign dated 1826 shows the portrait of the extravagant King George IV, the reverse a crowned and garnished shield.

King George IV was only on the throne for ten years, between 1820-30. From 1811 he had served as Prince Regent due to the mental illness of his father, King George III, otherwise known as ‘The Mad King’. When George IV died in 1830, his younger brother King William IV or ‘Sailor King’ took the throne.

The coin is a pleasing example; it shows good hair details along with a strong eye catching reverse. There is some minor surface wear and marks; this does not detract from its overall appeal.
