Roman Empire. Tiberius, 14-37 AD. AR Denarius. Lugdunum Mint. ‘Tribute Penny’ Type.

Obv: Laureate head of Tiberius right. Rev: Pax or Livia seated right on throne.

It is said the ‘Tribute Penny’ type was the coin shown to Jesus when he made his statement "render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's…". The phrase comes from the King James Version of the gospel account. In Mark 12:14-15, Jesus was asked, "Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?", he replies, "bring me a penny, that I may see it”.

An old grey collection tone, some light old surface marks, a good clear portrait and an attractive example of this Biblical issue.
