Philip And Mary, 1554-58. Shilling, 1554.

Philip And Mary, 1554-58. Shilling, 1554.

  • In 1554 Queen Mary, or commonly known as 'Bloody Mary', married King Philip of Naples in Winchester Cathedral, England. Earlier in 1554 she imprisoned her half-sister, later Queen Elizabeth I, at the Tower of London in the bell tower. She entered the Tower through Traitors Gate, imprisoned so that she could not lead a Protestant rebellion against Mary and take her place on the throne. Mary went on to be one of the most well-known Queens during her short reign until 1558, Elizabeth then took the throne.

The attractive tone and style of this evocative Shilling creates a striking and eye catching coin.
