Anglo-Saxon. AR Sceatta, c.710-60. Wodan Head / Pecking Bird Type. Hamwic (Southampton) Mint. Series H, Type 49.

 

Obv: Woden head ‘kite’ shaped facing within a pellet border, nine bosses (pellets-in-annulets) around with a trio of pellets between the lower two bosses, all within an outer border. Rev: Variety 1. A pecking crested peacock with splayed feet right, rosette of pellets below head, no pellet between legs.

An eye catching and well struck piece with a darker grey / silver tone. A desirable series of Sceatta in any condition, this piece in rare and well preserved order, certainly a striking example.
