Anglo-Saxon. Plated Or Billon Sceatta, c.710-60. Wodan Head / Pecking Bird Type. Hamwic (Southampton) Mint. Series H, Type 49, Variety 2 Reverse.

 

Obv: Woden head facing within a pellet border, seven bosses (pellets-in-annulets) around with pellets between, cross pommée below. Rev: A pecking crested peacock with splayed feet right, pellet in annulet above and below neck, pellet between legs.

A well struck piece showing strong details. Some areas of core metal showing through the silver surface and edges, light surface chipping to some high points. Much eye appeal and a desirable series of Sceatta in any condition.
