Lord Kitchener, 1st Earl, 1850-1916. Death Memorial Engraved Penny, 1916. Kitchener was a senior British Army Officer and colonial administrator. Prominent for imperial campaigns and central role in the early part of the First World War. Kitchener died, as this penny commemorates, on 5 June 1916. He was making his way to Russia on HMS Hampshire to attend negotiations with Tsar Nicholas II when in bad weather the ship struck a German mine off Orkney, Scotland. 737 died, including himself.

 

In very nice condition and state of preservation.
