Paduan Medal. Nero, 54-68 AD. AE Sestertius. An Early Cast, 16th-18th Century. After Or By Giovanni Da Cavino. 32-33mm. 20.12g.

 

Obv: NERO CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP PP, laureate head to right, aegis on left shoulder. Rev: SC, Nero mounted and carrying spear, behind him a horseman carrying a standard, DECVRSIO in exeruge.

 

Cavino was born in 1500 in Padua, he was the son of goldsmith Bartolommeo di Giovanni. Cavino trained with his father, he then trained with the renowned Paduan bronze sculptor Andrea Briscio (Riccio).

 

A very nice example of an early Paduan piece, with a good rich chocolate brown tone / patina. Some flattening to one edge, possibly in casting, and some surface wear and old marks.
