Charles I, 1625-49. Double Crown, mm. Cross Calvary, 1625-26. Bust 1a. Tower Mint. Pierced As Badge Or Touch Piece.
Reference: S. 2698.
Pierced, probably either to be worn as a Royal supporters badge during the English Civil War of 1642-51, or a touch piece - a coin or medal believed to have healing or protective properties, often associated with the practice of "touching for the King's Evil" (scrofula) by the monarch.
A well struck piece with a very eye catching portrait. With a rich gold tone, trivial surface marks.
